TITLE: Fitness Center Manager
REPORTS TO: Executive Director of Hospitality
EXEMPT/NON-EXEMPT : Non-Exempt
FUNCTION: Responsible for the overall leadership, operations, and programming of the Fitness Center. This role oversees staff, independent instructors, facilities, budgeting, and community wellness initiatives. The Manager ensures the Fitness Center delivers high-quality fitness, longevity, and wellness experiences while maintaining a welcoming, safe, and well-maintained environment for members. Ensures that all support and service is conducted and fulfilled in a manner consistent with the ONE BRAYS Leadership Credo.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES:
1. Directly manager and supervise employees and provide coaching, scheduling, performance feedback, and professional development for staff.
2. Foster a positive, service-oriented team culture.
3. Coordinate staffing coverage to ensure smooth daily operations.
4. Develop, plan, and execute community fitness events, workshops, and wellness initiatives.
5. Curate and expand fitness programming with an emphasis on longevity, mobility, strength, balance, recovery and overall wellness.
6. Utilize internal and external resources to introduce innovative wellness and fitness offerings.
7. Oversee and coordinate 1099 contract instructors teaching group fitness classes, ensuring quality, consistency, and alignment with community standards.
8. Collaborate with the Lead Fitness Professional on class schedules, personal training offerings, and special programs.
9. Ensure the Fitness Center is clean, safe, and welcoming, fully operational and well-maintained, and compliant with safety and operational standards
10. Oversee equipment condition, preventative maintenance, repairs, and replacement schedules.
11. Coordinate with vendors and service providers as needed.
12. Maintain policies and procedures for daily operations.
13. Develop, manage, and monitor the Fitness Center budget, ensuring financial responsibility and adherence to approved spending.
14. Track expenses, contractor payments, and program costs.
15. Assist with administrative duties, including scheduling, class and instructor coordination, program documentation and reporting and record-keeping
16. Recommend improvements or efficiencies to enhance operations and member experience.
17. Promote a welcoming, inclusive, and professional environment.
18. Engage with members to understand fitness needs and interests.
19. Ensure programs align with a holistic wellness philosophy that supports long-term health and active living.
20. Address member feedback and resolve concerns promptly and professionally.
21. Foster a “One Brays” culture that ensures alignment to values, employee engagement, owner-centricity, and resource sharing.
22. Provides exceptional customer service to owners, guests and internal and external partners.
23. Other duties as assigned.
Requirements
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Position involves climbing, sitting, standing, stooping, kneeling, pushing, shoving, lifting, carrying and moving objects that can weigh up to 50+lbs. This movement can occur through out the day. Must be able to transport oneself around the plantation. Must have valid South Carolina drivers’ license.
2. Able to see well enough to read faint, or partially obscured writing or printing to include safety signage, with corrective lenses, if needed.
3. Must be able to work extended hours, days, weekends and holidays when necessary.
4. Must possess the ability to physically subdue a combative individual.
5. Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication and to make discrimination in sound, perceiving their nature with no less than 40 db loss @
500 Hz. 1,000 Hz. and 2,000 Hz.
6. Ability to express or exchange information by means of spoken word.
ENVIRONMENTAL REQUIREMENTS:
1. Must be able to work constructively and cheerfully in an environment that may be stressful due to adversarial situations resulting from the proper performance of the department’s activities.
2. The employee may be required to participate in more than one assignment at time with frequent interruptions, changes and delays; the employee must be able
to remain focused and work effectively, efficiently and cheerfully under such circumstances.
3. Exposed to outside elements, including rain, wind, cold, extreme heat and humidity.
4. Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evenings or weekends for events.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education: Bachelor’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Health, Business, or related field preferred. Personal training or group fitness certification (ACE, NASM, ACSM, or similar).
Knowledge: Prior experience managing a fitness facility, wellness center, or similar environment. Computer knowledge with Microsoft Word and Excel. Knowledge of fitness programming, personal training, and group exercise.
Skills: Must demonstrate highly effective interpersonal skills, problem-solving abilities and advance communication skills. Strong leadership and staff management skills.
Experience: 2-4 years customer service experience in a fast-paced environment a must. Budget management and administrative experience preferred. Budget management and administrative experience.
