Description
The Applied Sport Scientist supports player development, readiness, and performance by coordinating sport science testing, workload monitoring, data management, and reporting across the Arizona complex and affiliate locations. This position translates player performance data into practical, actionable information for Strength and Conditioning, coaching, medical, and biomechanics staff to support training, workload, and player development decisions.
The role will help develop and maintain scalable sport science workflows across the organization, ensuring consistent testing, monitoring, data integration, and communication across levels. The Applied Sport Scientist will work closely with performance and on-field staff to identify meaningful trends, support player evaluation, and improve the application of sport science information within daily baseball operations.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES
Offseason
Prepare workload monitoring and physical performance testing systems using Catapult, VALD ForceDecks, 1080 Motion, NordBord, and GymAware for January programming, Spring Training, and affiliate deployment.
Maintain and improve AMS data, questionnaires, dashboards, reporting, and performance data integration.
Develop and maintain testing protocols, education resources, and sport science workflows.
Support staff onboarding and education related to monitoring systems, testing protocols, and data interpretation.
Review performance benchmarks and normative data to support player evaluation and development.
Assist with offseason player monitoring, draft camp testing, and amateur draft performance reporting.
Spring Training
Manage workload monitoring and physical performance testing using Catapult, VALD ForceDecks, and 1080 Motion.
Coordinate performance testing and integration of testing data into AMS.
Monitor player workload and performance trends and provide actionable reporting to Strength and Conditioning and on-field staff.
Support physical profiling, benchmarking, and testing to inform player development, readiness, and workload management.
Continue onboarding affiliate Strength and Conditioning staff and ensure equipment, testing protocols, and workflows are prepared for the season.
In-Season
Manage daily workload monitoring and physical performance testing at the Arizona complex using Catapult, VALD ForceDecks, 1080 Motion, NordBord, and GymAware.
Maintain accurate AMS data and provide timely reporting to support training, workload management, readiness, and player development.
Collaborate with performance, coaching, medical, and biomechanics staff to integrate and apply physical, workload, and performance data.
Support affiliate and Dominican Republic sport science initiatives, including testing, staff education, equipment, data integration, and troubleshooting.
Monitor player workload and performance trends and communicate relevant findings and potential areas of concern to performance and on-field staff.
Requirements
MINIMUM KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Master’s degree in Exercise Science, Kinesiology, Sport Science, Data Science, or a related field required.
Applied experience in sport science, strength and conditioning, or performance science with competitive athletes; professional baseball experience preferred.
Strong knowledge of workload monitoring, physical testing, athlete readiness, and performance profiling.
Experience with athlete monitoring systems and performance technologies such as Catapult, VALD ForceDecks, and 1080 Motion preferred.
Strong understanding of baseball and the physical demands of the sport.
Strong analytical, organizational, and data management skills, with the ability to translate data into actionable information.
Excellent communication and collaboration skills across performance, coaching, medical, and biomechanics staff.
Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced professional baseball environment.
Ability and willingness to travel and work evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by the baseball calendar.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Based in Surprise, AZ, at the Rangers’ Arizona complex.
Work occurs across office, weight room, field, and testing environments.
Regular interaction with Strength and Conditioning, performance, coaching, medical, and biomechanics staff.
Periodic travel to affiliate locations and other organizational sites.
Evening, weekend, and holiday hours required as dictated by the baseball calendar.
